Breastfeeding is the natural way of feeding infants, which ensures proper development of children and reduces the risk of many diseases. However, breast milk does not contain sufficient amounts of vitamin K and D3. Therefore, administration of vitamin K and vitamin D3 in infants in the first months of age exclusively breastfed is a very important element of the prevention of deficiency of these vitamins.
Vitamin K plays an important role in the production of proteins including those involved in the regulation of coagulation. It is an important factor in proper blood clotting.
Vitamin D3 is a very important factor in the regulation of calcium-phosphorus in the body. It is essential for the proper absorption of calcium and phosphorus and is responsible for the proper development and bone mineralization. Deficiency of this vitamin can lead to impaired bone mineralization, insufficent calcification newly forming bone tissue and, consequently, to curvature changes in infants and young children. Role of vitamin D3 is to improve calcium absorption in the intestine and allow its incorporation into bone.
